Building the Language Foundation for Learning
Lovia recognises strong listening, speaking, reading and writing as essential foundations for learning in every other subject.
The pathway
Listen, speak, read, understand, write
This is the sequence Lovia is designing its English and literacy work around. Each step supports the next; children who are stronger in one area still return to strengthen the others.
Step 1
Listen
Hearing English clearly and confidently.
Step 2
Speak
Using spoken language without fear of mistakes.
Step 3
Phonics
Connecting sounds to letters and patterns.
Step 4
Read
Decoding, then reading with fluency.
Step 5
Vocabulary
Words that unlock every other subject.
Step 6
Understand
Meaning, inference and comprehension.
Step 7
Write
Expressing thought clearly in writing.
The steps are not a ladder to be climbed once. A confident reader still returns to listening and speaking; a strong speaker still needs vocabulary and careful writing.
Why it matters
English opens the door to every other subject
Language is how learning is carried. A child who reads and writes with confidence can reach the rest of the curriculum.
A learner who follows spoken English can take part in a lesson. One who reads with fluency can understand a science explanation or a mathematics problem without the language itself becoming the obstacle. One who writes clearly can show what they actually know.
For that reason Lovia treats listening and speaking as real academic work, not as preparation for the real work. Sound and meaning come before spelling, and confidence comes before performance.
Vocabulary is given deliberate attention throughout, because words are what allow a learner to think precisely and to understand a text they have never seen before.
Learners do not all begin at the same point, and they are not expected to. The purpose is to meet each child where they genuinely are and keep them moving forward — start where you are, keep going further.
