Stage information
The direction of learning at this stage
Senior High is where study becomes more focused and a young person takes responsibility for their own learning and their own conduct.
Academic work becomes more concentrated and more demanding. Students read at length, write with structure and evidence, and are expected to reason carefully and defend their thinking in discussion as well as on paper.
Independent thinking is the central habit: planning one's own study, judging the quality of information, and working steadily without constant supervision.
Science, technology and practical learning develop the ability to investigate, to work with data and tools, and to apply knowledge to real situations rather than only to examples on a page.
Character and responsibility carry equal weight. The purpose of the stage is a young person prepared for further education, training and work — capable, honest, articulate, and able to take their own next step with confidence.
