Academic Stage 3
Junior High School
JHS is where subject knowledge deepens and students begin to take ownership of their learning — how they study, how they write, and how they manage their time.
Educational goals
Depth, independence and academic habits
Students move from being taught to studying: reading demanding texts, structuring arguments, working through multi-step problems and meeting deadlines.
Academic writing
Structured, evidenced writing across subjects, not only in English.
Mathematical reasoning
Algebraic thinking, data and problem solving with explanation.
Science and investigation
Method, evidence and clear reporting.
Digital capability
Research, safety, judgement about sources, and creating with tools.
Responsibility
Growing independence and accountability for one's own progress.
Stage information
The direction of learning at this stage
Junior High is where understanding deepens and a student begins to think, work and communicate more independently.
Subjects are studied in greater depth, and students are expected to explain their reasoning rather than only produce answers. Reading becomes more demanding, and writing is used to build and support an argument across every subject, not only in English.
Critical thinking is practised directly: weighing evidence, comparing explanations, noticing when a claim is not supported, and changing one's mind when the reasoning requires it.
Science and technology are approached as method and awareness — investigating carefully, reporting clearly, and using digital tools with judgement about sources, safety and purpose.
Character and responsible citizenship grow alongside the academic work. Students are asked to manage their own time, meet commitments, work well with others, and consider the effect of their choices on the people around them.
