STEM at Lovia
STEM at Lovia is about solving problems, asking questions, building things and understanding how the world works.
Six pathways
Every pathway uses materials you can find at home, at school or in the market.
Make something with your hands, test it, and make it better.
2 activities
Water, weather, waste and the environment around you.
3 activities
Sunlight, heat, electricity and how energy moves and changes.
2 activities
Seeds, soil, water and the journey food takes to reach you.
3 activities
Levers, pulleys, bridges and structures that carry a load.
7 activities
Algorithms, loops, circuits and the technology in daily life.

How we investigate
The same six steps every time, so a learner always knows what comes next. There are no rankings and no scores — the goal is a better design, not a winner.
Step 1
For younger learners: Wonder
What do we want to find out?
Step 2
For younger learners: Guess
What do we think will happen, and why?
Step 3
For younger learners: Try
Make it, or try it, changing one thing at a time.
Step 4
For younger learners: Look
What actually happened? Record it honestly.
Step 5
For younger learners: Tell
Say why you think it happened.
Step 6
For younger learners: Try again
Change one thing and test it again.

Hands-on
Lovia writes these activities. Read the safety note before you start any activity that uses water, tools or electricity.
Build a simple filter from a plastic bottle, sand, gravel and cloth, and see how it changes muddy water.
Why Lovia recommends this: It uses materials found almost anywhere and teaches separation, observation and fair testing.
What to do: Follow the Lovia journey step by step. Safety: filtered water is NOT safe to drink, even when it looks clear.
Ghana connection: Connects to household water storage and the difference between clear water and safe water.

Plant a bean seed and record what changes each day for two weeks.
Why Lovia recommends this: Teaches patient observation and recording — the habit at the centre of all science.
What to do: Plant two seeds. Water one, keep the other dry. Draw both every day for two weeks and write one sentence each day.
Ghana connection: Compare your results with what farmers do at the start of the rainy season.

Make a lever and a pulley from everyday materials and measure how much easier lifting becomes.
Why Lovia recommends this: Learners feel the difference a machine makes, which explains the idea better than a definition.
What to do: Build the lever first. Move the pivot and notice when lifting becomes easiest.
Ghana connection: Look for levers and pulleys at a building site, a well or a market stall.

Build a paper bridge, test how much it carries, then redesign it to carry more.
Why Lovia recommends this: The improve step is the real lesson: a first design that fails is useful information.
What to do: Test with coins or stones, one at a time. Record the number carried before it bends.
Ghana connection: Look at how a footbridge near you is shaped, and why.

Measure how the sun heats water in different containers, and explain the difference.
Why Lovia recommends this: Solar energy is visible daily in Ghana; measuring it turns a familiar thing into evidence.
What to do: Fill two identical containers with the same amount of water. Put one in shade, one in sun. Compare after one hour. Safety: do not touch hot containers with bare hands.
Ghana connection: Relates directly to solar panels, solar water heating and drying crops in the sun.

Make a simple rain gauge and record rainfall, cloud and temperature for two weeks.
Why Lovia recommends this: Turns learners into data collectors, then gives them their own data to interpret.
What to do: Record at the same time every day. Draw a bar chart at the end of two weeks.
Ghana connection: Compare your record with what farmers expect at this point in the season.

Design a way to water plants slowly using a bottle, and test whether it works.
Why Lovia recommends this: A genuine engineering problem with a real agricultural purpose and a measurable result.
What to do: Make a small hole in a bottle cap. Time how long the bottle takes to empty. Change the hole size and test again.
Ghana connection: Drip watering is used in dry-season farming to make limited water go further.

Make a working circuit with a battery and small bulb, or test the same ideas in a simulation.
Why Lovia recommends this: Every learner should build one working circuit; if components are unavailable, the simulation stands in.
What to do: Use only a small torch battery and a small bulb. Safety: never use mains electricity, wall sockets or car batteries for this activity.
