Lovia Learning Journey

Build a Simple Machine

Feel how a machine makes work easier.

Lovia Learning JourneyPrimary · Junior HighAbout 40 min

What you'll learn

  • How a lever changes the effort needed to lift
  • Where the pivot should go and why
  • How to test a design and improve it

What you'll need

  • A ruler or flat stick
  • A round pencil or small stone as a pivot
  • A small load
  • String

The journey

Step by step

  1. Step 1 · Learn it

    What a lever does

A lever does not create force. It trades distance for effort: you move further, but you push less hard.

  2. Step 2 · Try it

    Build the lever

Rest the stick on the pivot. Put the load on one end and press the other. Then move the pivot and try again.

Why Lovia recommends this: Learners feel the difference a machine makes, which explains the idea better than a definition.

What to do: Build the lever first. Move the pivot and notice when lifting becomes easiest.

Ghana connection: Look for levers and pulleys at a building site, a well or a market stall.

  3. Step 3 · See it

    See forces at work

Use the forces simulation to test push, pull and friction.

Why Lovia recommends this: Learners can change one thing at a time and see the effect immediately — real experimental thinking.

What to do: Change only one setting at a time, and write down what happened each time.

  4. Step 4 · Ghana connection

    Levers you already use

A wheelbarrow, a pair of scissors and a bottle opener are all levers. Find three more near you.

  5. Step 5 · Check my learning

Where must the pivot go to make lifting easiest, and why?

Hands-on

Lever test

  1. 1Place the pivot in the middle and lift the load. Notice the effort.
  2. 2Move the pivot close to the load. Lift again.
  3. 3Move the pivot far from the load. Lift again.
  4. 4Record which position was easiest.

Keep fingers clear of the load when it drops. Use a light load only.

Think it through

What did you change, and what happened to the effort you needed?

Nothing is saved to an account, scored or shared. This is only for you.
