Numbers Around Me

Count, group and share the things you already see.

Lovia Learning JourneyEarly Years · PrimaryAbout 40 min

What you'll learn

  • Count objects accurately and say how many
  • Recognise written numerals
  • Share a quantity into equal groups

What you'll need

  • Twelve small objects: stones, seeds or bottle tops
  • Paper and pencil

The journey

Step by step

  1. Step 1 · Learn it

    What counting really means

Each object gets exactly one number word, and the last number you say is how many there are. Practise with real objects before any screen.

  2. Step 2 · See it

    See it explained

Work through the early-mathematics path for counting and number recognition.

Why Lovia recommends this: A learner can start at any point in the path, which suits learners who missed school time.

What to do: Choose one topic, watch the short explanation, then do the practice questions.

  3. Step 3 · Try it

    Try it with twelve objects

Count your twelve objects. Then group them in twos, in threes and in fours. Write each grouping as a number sentence.

  4. Step 4 · Ghana connection

    At the market

Four children share 12 oranges equally. How many does each child receive? Now try 15 oranges among 4 children and explain what happens to the leftovers.

  5. Step 5 · Check my learning

    Check my learning

Share 20 objects equally between 5 people, then write the division sentence for what you did.

  6. Step 6 · What's next?

    What's next?

Move on to multiplication and division practice.

      Multiplication and division

Times tables, multiplying larger numbers, and sharing into equal groups.

Why Lovia recommends this: Division makes sense once it is seen as sharing equally, not as a rule to remember.

What to do: Say each times table out loud once before practising it.

Ghana connection: Four children share 12 oranges equally. How many does each child receive?

Where else in your day do you already share things equally?
