Plant it, watch it, record it, explain it.

Lovia Learning JourneyEarly Years · PrimaryAbout 30 min

What you'll learn

  • What a seed needs in order to grow
  • How to record a change over time
  • How to compare two results fairly

What you'll need

  • Two bean seeds
  • Two cups or tins
  • Soil
  • Water
  • A notebook

The journey

Step by step

  1. Step 1 · Learn it

    What a seed needs

A seed needs water, warmth, air and — once it is above the soil — light. Take one of these away and the plant tells you.

  2. Step 2 · Try it

    Set up your test

Plant both seeds the same way. Water one and keep the other dry. Everything else must stay the same, or the test is not fair.

Why Lovia recommends this: Teaches patient observation and recording — the habit at the centre of all science.

What to do: Plant two seeds. Water one, keep the other dry. Draw both every day for two weeks and write one sentence each day.

Ghana connection: Compare your results with what farmers do at the start of the rainy season.

Use the instructions above — no link needed.

  3. Step 3 · See it

    Read about living things

Read one short section about what plants need and how they make their food.

Why Lovia recommends this: Mostly text and diagrams, so it works on a slow connection.

What to do: Read one section, close the page, and say what you remember out loud.

Ghana connection: Compare what a maize plant and a cassava plant need to grow well.

  4. Step 4 · Ghana connection

    Planting with the rains

Farmers plant when the rains begin. Your dry cup shows exactly why that timing matters.

  5. Step 5 · Check my learning

    Check my learning

After two weeks, explain the difference between your two cups and name the one thing that caused it.

Hands-on

Two seeds, two weeks

  1. 1Fill two cups with the same soil.
  2. 2Plant one seed in each, at the same depth.
  3. 3Water one cup a little each day. Leave the other dry.
  4. 4Draw both cups every day and write one sentence.
  5. 5After two weeks, compare your drawings.

Think it through

What was the one thing you changed, and what stayed the same?

Nothing is saved to an account, scored or shared. This is only for you.
