Lovia Learning Journey

Build a Water Filter

Ask. Predict. Build. Observe. Explain. Improve.

Lovia Learning JourneyPrimary · Junior HighAbout 45 min

What you'll learn

  • How a filter separates solid particles from water
  • Why clear water is not the same as safe water
  • How to improve a design after testing it

What you'll need

  • A plastic bottle (an adult cuts it)
  • Clean sand
  • Small stones or gravel
  • A clean cloth
  • Muddy water
  • A cup to catch the water

The journey

Step by step

  1. Step 1 · Learn it

    What a filter does

A filter has small gaps. Water passes through them; larger pieces of dirt cannot. That is all filtering is — separating by size.

  2. Step 2 · Try it

    Build and test it

Layer cloth, then sand, then stones inside the cut bottle, turned upside down. Pour muddy water in the top and watch what comes out.

Why Lovia recommends this: It uses materials found almost anywhere and teaches separation, observation and fair testing.

What to do: Follow the Lovia journey step by step. Safety: filtered water is NOT safe to drink, even when it looks clear.

Ghana connection: Connects to household water storage and the difference between clear water and safe water.

  3. Step 3 · Ghana connection

    Water at home

Many households store water after collecting it. Filtering removes visible dirt, which is one step — but it is not the step that makes water safe.

  4. Step 4 · Challenge me

    Improve it

Change one layer — thicker sand, a second cloth — and test again with the same amount of muddy water. Did it improve?

  5. Step 5 · Check my learning

    Check my learning

Explain to someone why the water that comes out looks cleaner, and why it still must not be drunk.

Hands-on

Build the filter

  1. 1An adult cuts the bottle in half.
  2. 2Turn the top half upside down inside the bottom half, like a funnel.
  3. 3Put the cloth in the neck, then a layer of sand, then a layer of stones.
  4. 4Pour muddy water slowly into the top.
  5. 5Compare the water that comes out with what you poured in.

SAFETY: filtered water is NOT safe to drink, no matter how clear it looks. Filtering removes dirt you can see; it does not remove germs. An adult must do all cutting.

Think it through

What did your filter remove, and what could still be in the water that you cannot see?

Nothing is saved to an account, scored or shared. This is only for you.

What's next?

  • Design a second filter and test both fairly
  • Record how long each filter takes
