Lovia Learning Journey

My First English Words

Hear a sound, say it, build a word, read it.

Lovia Learning JourneyEarly Years · Primary · Junior High · Senior HighAbout 45 min

What you'll learn

  • Hear the first sound in a spoken word
  • Match that sound to the letter that writes it
  • Blend sounds together into a whole word
  • Read a very short story containing that word

What you'll need

  • A phone or computer with sound
  • Somewhere you can speak out loud
  • Paper and pencil (optional)

The journey

Step by step

  1. Step 1 · Learn it

Start with Sounds & First Words

Lovia's own nine-lesson sequence teaches one sound, one letter and one word, carefully and slowly. It works for a five-year-old and for a fifteen-year-old who is starting English now.

    • Lovia OriginalLearn

Lovia Original — Start with Sounds & First Words

Lovia's own nine-step beginner English sequence: hear a sound, meet the letter, build a word, read a short story and show what you know.

      • Early Years · Primary · Junior High · Senior High
      • 45 min
      • Low data
      • Offline support planned
      • Phone with sound

Why Lovia recommends this: It is Lovia's own teaching sequence, with spoken audio, written transcripts and no sign-in — and it works for an older learner who is starting English from the beginning.

What to do: Work through the nine short lessons in order. Say the sounds out loud. You can stop and come back — your place is remembered on this device only.

  2. Step 2 · Try it

    Say it out loud

Sounds only become yours when you say them. Use the speaking prompts with a partner — nothing is recorded and nothing is scored.

    • Lovia OriginalCreate

Lovia Original — Say it out loud: five speaking prompts

Five short speaking prompts a learner practises with a partner, a parent or a teacher. Nothing is recorded.

      • Primary · Junior High · Senior High
      • 10 min
      • Text only
      • Works offline
      • No device needed

Why Lovia recommends this: Speaking improves through use, not through being scored. These prompts create a reason to talk in English.

What to do: Choose one prompt. Speak for one minute to a partner. Swap. Then try the same prompt again and add one more sentence.

Use the instructions above — no link needed.

  3. Step 3 · Try it

    Read a whole book

Choose a first-words storybook and finish it. Finishing matters more than speed.

    • From African StorybookRead

      First-words storybooks

The simplest African Storybook titles: a few words per page, with a strong picture clue.

      • Early Years · Primary
      • 10 min
      • Medium data
      • Internet needed
      • Any phone

Why Lovia recommends this: A learner who knows only a few words can still finish a whole book, which matters enormously.

What to do: Read the picture first, then the words. Finishing the book is the goal.

  4. Step 4 · Check my learning

    Check my learning

Say three words that begin with the same sound you learned. Then write the letter for that sound.

  5. Step 5 · What's next?

    What's next?

Move to short stories with audio, or repeat the sounds lessons — repeating is not going backwards.

    • From British Council LearnEnglish KidsRead

Short stories to listen and read

Illustrated short stories with audio, so a learner can listen and follow the words at the same time.

      • Primary · Junior High
      • 15 min
      • Medium data
      • Internet needed
      • Phone with sound

Why Lovia recommends this: Hearing a story while seeing the words is one of the strongest supports for a learner reading in a second language.

What to do: Listen once without reading. Listen again while following the words. Then read it yourself.

Think it through

Which sound was easiest to hear, and which one do you want to practise again tomorrow?

Nothing is saved to an account, scored or shared. This is only for you.

What's next?

  • Read one storybook aloud to someone at home
  • Find five things in the room starting with your sound
