Lovia Learning Journey

Coding Without a Computer

Precise instructions, no device, no data.

Lovia Learning JourneyEarly Years · Primary · Junior HighAbout 30 min

What you'll learn

  • What an algorithm is
  • Why instructions must be exact
  • How to find and fix a mistake in a sequence

What you'll need

  • A partner
  • Paper and pencil
  • Space to walk a few steps

The journey

Step by step

  1. Step 1 · Learn it

An algorithm is a list of exact steps

A computer does exactly what it is told, in exactly the order it is told. If the order is wrong, the result is wrong — and that is not a failure, it is information.

  2. Step 2 · Play it

    Be the robot

One person writes the steps; the other follows them exactly, with no guessing. Then swap.

Write instructions for a partner to follow exactly, and discover what an algorithm really is.

      • No device needed

Why Lovia recommends this: No device, no data and no electricity needed — and it teaches sequencing better than a screen does.

What to do: Give your partner instructions one step at a time. They must do exactly what you say.

  3. Step 3 · Try it

    Find the loop

Write your morning routine. Circle what repeats — that is a loop. Underline what only happens in response to something — that is an event.

Find loops and events in daily routines, then write them as instructions.

      • No device needed

Why Lovia recommends this: Connects abstract programming words to routines the learner already performs every day.

What to do: Write your morning routine as a list. Circle anything you repeat. Underline anything that only happens when something else happens.

Use the instructions above — no link needed.

  4. Step 4 · Challenge me

    Debug it

Deliberately swap two steps in your partner's list. Can they find the mistake by following it?

  5. Step 5 · What's next?

    What's next?

If a computer is available, try block coding puzzles.

Why Lovia recommends this: A complete first coding experience in one session, with no installation.

What to do: Choose one puzzle set. Read the goal before dragging any block.

Think it through

Which instruction was misunderstood, and how would you rewrite it?

Nothing is saved to an account, scored or shared. This is only for you.
